At the top of the speaker, you will find the main driver that pumps out the mid and high range sound, which fills a room nicely with a full sound experience. This kind of speaker is made in such a way that the sound bounces off the ceiling giving you a full 360-degree music experience.
The housing of the speaker is made from either black or white plastic. On the top and bottom, each speaker is covered with a grill, which features the JBL logo. Both, the top and the bottom speakers are made of the usual rubber resource, which makes the speaker waterproof.
This JBL speaker looks outstanding for a portable speaker that will not only provide you with an awesome music experience, but also give you an amusing light show. JBL have done well as far as creating a wireless speaker that looks good and provides an outstanding light show.

With only minimal occasional dropouts you will be able to stream the music freely and continuously to your heart’s content.
If there is anything negative to say here, it would be that you would expect to see Bluetooth 5.0 installed as it’s been around for some time now and there are a lot of speakers that have it installed.
- Buttons for controlling the Pulse 4 Speaker
The first panel has a power button to power the speaker on or off. On either side of the power button is the volume up and down buttons for easy access.
On another panel, there is the JBL PartyBoost button, which allows the speaker to connect to another PartyBoost portable speaker. Next to this button, there is the Bluetooth button, which puts the speaker into pairing mode to allow the connection of a device.
When it comes to charging, the JBL Pulse 4 speaker has a USB-C plug, which is an improvement on previous releases.
- A few Features that are Missing
There is no longer a 3.5 mm audio cable input. With the Pulse 4 Bluetooth speaker, you can only connect via a wireless connection. Also, the JBL Connect+ multi-speaker connection is not available either.
When it comes to hands-free calling, it isn’t possible with the Pulse 4 as there is no microphone installed. And, there is no support for Siri or Google assist. This speaker is made purely as a party speaker that gives off a light show to keep you and your guests entertained.
Room Filling Audio
This Bluetooth speaker looks fairly impressive with all the screen area for the LED lights, which leaves you wondering if it’s actually going to fill a room with an enjoyable listening experience.
Well, it certainly does! The sound this speaker makes fills the room with good loud music without any problem. A full 360-degree music experience that’s achieved by bouncing the sound off the ceiling will pleasantly surprise you without a doubt.
When it comes to using this JBL portable speaker outdoors, you will notice that the sound qualities are still good, only there’s no ceiling for the music to bounce off. Thus, of course, you will have a less fulfilling experience.
Still, if you’re looking for a Bluetooth speaker that provides a kick-ass light show along with your fantastic music, then the Pulse 4 is definitely worth checking out.
Waterproof and Does Float
Looking to party or entertain near water? Of course, the JBL Pulse 4 is water-resistant. In fact, it’s waterproof with an IPX7 waterproof rating, which allows this portable wireless speaker to be fully immersed in water of up to 1 meter.
This speaker will withstand water if fully submerged for up to 30 minutes without missing a beat.
With a Color Changing Light Show and a Pulse
If you’re on a hunt for a speaker with lots of LED lights that’s bright and will give a fantastic light show at a party, then the JBL Pulse 4 portable Bluetooth speaker will for sure impress.
The speaker has 4 preset light modes for different surroundings or different moods. There’s a spiritual mode for the times you would prefer a calming and relaxing environment. In winter, when you might feel a little chill, there is the campfire mode, which simulates a campfire giving you warm colors.
Want a feeling of the breeze from the ocean, like if you were at the beach?
Then simply select the wave mode, which would give the effect of waves from the pool or sea. The last but not least preset mode is an equalizer setting, which simulates the waves from an equalizer.
Next, let’s look at the available color settings. Now, if you desire to play around with the color settings, this can be done as well. With the JBL Connect app, the LED lights can be personalized to your liking. For example, if you want a ‘lava lamp’ effect, then this JBL portable speaker can definitely achieve this as easy as a button push.
On top of that, the app is able to utilize the camera on your mobile phone as well, if required. This allows you to photograph anything you want and apply the colors of the photo to the Pulse 4 speaker light mode.
When the volume is adjusted, the lights move up and down displaying the volume level at which your music is pumping.
Plenty of effects to try out if you want to customize your wireless speaker. Or if you want a simple set up, just stick to the preset options. Either way, you can have a mind-blowing experience with this pulsating Bluetooth speaker.
360‑degree LED Lightshow for All the Angles
Being that this speaker is round, the light show is a full 360 degrees. This means, if you have your JBL Pulse 4 portable Bluetooth speaker set up in the middle of a room, it’s going to bounce the light all around.
A perfect colorful light show from the LED lights to give you that night club or rock concert effect.
How the Pulse 4 Stacks Up Against the Competition
There’s plenty of competition out there when it comes to Bluetooth speakers and their features.
The biggest difference that’s going to be most obvious most of the time is the light show you get from a JBL Pulse 4 speaker.
The majority of other portable speakers have very little to no lighting at all, so if you’re after an exhilarating light show, then this wireless speaker is far ahead of the competition.
Pulse 4 vs Flip 5
If we compare these two JBL portable Bluetooth speakers, we will find that they are almost identical in features. Both of them are using Bluetooth 4.2 and have the same output wattage of 20 watts.
Battery life is identical with 2 hours of playtime from both wireless speakers. Although, the Pulse 4 has a larger battery to allow for the extra power to run the LEDs.
If you’re wanting to purchase a speaker that’s got the 3.5 mm audio cable input, these ones aren’t for you, as neither of them has this plug. You may want to look at the JBL Flip 4 instead, which is still equipped with one of these plugs.
If you’re not interested in a speaker that has an LED light show, then you’re going to be better off just going with a Flip 5 Bluetooth speaker. So, all-in-all, there is not really a lot of difference between the two, except for the lights and that the Pulse 4 also has 360-degree sound.
Pulse 4 vs. UE Megaboom 3
It’s not easy to put these two portable speakers head to head as the Megaboom 3 blows the Pulse 4 away in just about every aspect except the LED light show department.
All the features that a Pulse 4 doesn’t have are all included in the Megaboom 3. You have 3.5mm input jack, customizable equalizer as well as support for virtual assistants.
However, if you’re after a party speaker to do the lighting as well, then the JBL Pulse 4 is the portable speaker you’re looking for.
Pulse 4 vs Pulse 3
There are a few differences here. The main two being the amount of LED lights and the size of the display. If you’re interested in acquiring a speaker with more lights, then you’ll want the Pulse 4.
On the other side, the Pulse 3 has all the features that you would want from a Bluetooth speaker. It has the audio cable input jack as well as voice assistant integration.
Therefore, the Pulse 3 may not be such a bad option here, depending on your requirements and your personal preference. If it’s all about the lights, though, then the JBL Pulse 4 portable speaker is for you.
Some Extra Add-Ons thanks to JBL
Thanks to JBL, you have the PartyBoost option, which allows for 2 or more PartyBoost speakers to be paired together at the same time. Just remember that a PartyBoost speaker will not pair with the older JBL Connect+. For example, the Pulse 3 portable speaker cannot pair with the new Pulse 4 wireless speaker.
A JBL Pulse 4 wireless speaker lights up the night with its 360-degree light show as well as the JBL signature sound in all directions. 360 degrees light and sound for an amazing party experience.
The Pulse 4 App
With the JBL connect app it’s possible to customize the lighting effects and colors of the LED lights. 4 different themes to choose from, too. You can even use this JBL portable speaker as an ambient light without having to play any music.
JBL Pulse Equalizer for Custom Tuning
Unfortunately, with this Bluetooth speaker, JBL has failed to provide any kind of EQ app or system. However, as most people are probably aware, there are plenty of aftermarket apps for your smartphone.
Any of those apps will give you full control and allow you to change the bass and treble, etc. to adapt the sound to your liking.
JBL may add this feature in the future through a simple update, but who knows. For now, if you want a speaker that has an equalizer, then there are plenty to choose from or just download an app to do it for you.
Conclusion: Is the Pulse 4 Worth Purchasing
This Bluetooth speaker is 100% worth the purchase if you want an outstanding light show to go with your music. Even though there are a few features missing that were in the previous Pulse 3 model, it’s still going to make an exceptional party speaker.
With 360-degree sound, this speaker is just as good as the earlier model and may even be slightly better.
Fully waterproof with an IPX7 waterproof rating, it’s the perfect companion for that next pool party.
If it’s all about the lights and the light show for you, then the JBL Pulse 4 portable Bluetooth speaker is by far one of the best for this.
With a full-length screen for lighting and is a full 360 degrees, it’s going to light any room up like a nightclub.
Like we mentioned earlier, if it’s all about the lights, then grab yours today.
